Introduction to Khichi Kaun

Khichi Kaun is a board game. It draws inspiration from the Phad art form of Rajasthan, celebrating the vibrant storytelling tradition surrounding the legendary battle between Pabuji and Khichi. Our goal was to blend ancient narrative art with engaging gameplay that resonates with players.

Process

The process of creating Khichi Kaun involved multiple steps, which we meticulously followed to ensure the final product aligned with our vision:

Research

We began our research by studying Phad paintings, exploring their folklore, art forms, and cultural practices. We also analyzed various board games, focusing on mechanics, rule systems, and successful examples. For the concept, we drew inspiration from the battle between Pabuji and Khichi, integrating Phad’s essence into a playable format. During conceptualization, we defined character roles, cow tokens, and their relationships. Initial prototypes included designing the playing mat, character cards, and tokens. Multiple rounds of playtesting helped us identify and resolve challenges in the mechanics, rules, and engagement. The visual design involved creating character cards inspired by Phad motifs and establishing a cohesive color palette. The final product is an engaging game that blends Phad storytelling with strategy, bluffing, and player interaction.

Ideation

During the ideation phase, we worked on conceptualization, prototyping, and playtesting. The prototype included 9 character cards, 20 cow tokens, and a play mat, with the gameplay involving bluffing, token exchanges, and strategic thinking. Players took on roles such as Pabuji, Khichi, Ravan, Deval Kumari, and villagers. Initial playtest feedback revealed challenges in understanding the rules and token exchanges, which we addressed by simplifying mechanics, introducing clearer audio instructions, and refining token interactions. Despite the early confusion, players found the game engaging, with new strategies emerging after a few rounds. The gameplay revolves around players following character actions through an audio guide, where Pabuji’s team aims to gather positive-value cow tokens, while Khichi’s team bluffs to collect them, with the winner determined by the final token count.

Final Product

The final product was a polished, culturally rich, and highly engaging board game that brought the story of Pabuji and Khichi to life. Through strategic play, players engage with Phad’s narrative art while competing to outwit one another.
